What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, also known as Stein-Leventhal Syndrome is one of the most common endocrine disorders of women. In the U.S. about 5 million women have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), many of them without realizing it. PCOS is a condition where a woman has multiple small cysts in the ovaries. These cysts may cause hormone imbalance resulting in various symptoms. The exact cause is still unknown, however strong familial aggregation indicates a genetic basis.
The good news is that this condition can be detected in the adolescent age so that early intervention is possible to prevent long-term consequences of PCOS.
